Gawker primed me to disapprove of this video with young girls dancing to "Single Ladies," but I thought they were just fine and even kind of great.
Isn't there a song that is not about, you know, marriage, that they could dance to?
Pro-marriage is a bad message for young girls? When did that happen? When I was a kid, in the 1950s, we played "house," in which you pretended to be a married woman. With children, of course. Adults loved to give us baby dolls to play with. Imagine that. It was all perfectly okay. As for the costumes the girls are wearing in that video — again, in the 1950s "dress up" was a perfectly conventional and encouraged form of play. When did that become wrong?
If you don't think girls should dance like Beyonce in "Single Ladies," you shouldn't let them see the video at all. When I was a kid, I learned to dance listening to "The Mexican Hat Dance." I think I'd be a lot better off or at least a lot better dancer if I could have learned how to dance from "Single Ladies."
So Joe Wilson suddenly felt it was okay to yell out "You lie" while Obama was taking his glamorous turn upon the stage of a joint session of Congress. There was something that needed to be said and it couldn't wait until after. It just had to be said during and traditional etiquette be damned.
“Thank you so much!” Swift began. “I always dreamed about what it would be like to maybe win one of these some day, but I never actually thought it would have happened. I sing country music so thank you so much for giving me a chance to win a VMA award.”
Before she could continue, West broke in. “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!” Kanye shouted to a mortified Swift and the speechless audience. And as quickly as he ran onstage — MTV cut away to show Pink applauding Taylor, and when they flashed back to Swift, West already had the mic in his hand — he was off, leaving a shocked Swift in his wake....
[A]fter Kanye handed the microphone back to Swift, her time was up, and MTV cut to a video featuring Tracy Morgan and Eminem....
Later in the show, Beyoncé did win for her video, in a better category, Video of the Year, so it's not as though MTV didn't agree with West's opinion. It just didn't agree with principles of logic — if Beyoncé's video was the Video of the Year, how was not the best in the lesser category of Best Female Video? — and it failed to realize that everyone watching wouldn't understand how the divvying up of awards worked in MTV world and keep their pants on until all the Moonmen were doled out.
Kanye West, like Joe Wilson, had to say what he knew to be true right when he saw the bright, shining truth of it. Lies must be denounced as lies at the moment of their utterance. Joe Wilson could not wait until Obama had gone through to the end of his extended remarks, and Kanye West could not allow Taylor Swift to speak uninterrupted for — what was the allotted time? — one minute.
Afterwards, like Joe Wilson, Kanye West apologized:
"I’m sooooo sorry to taylor swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! …………………… i’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!……………. beyonce’s video was the best of this decade! I’m sorry to my fans if I let you guys down! I’m sorry to my friends at mtv. I will apologize to taylor 2mrw. welcome to the real world! everybody wanna booooo me but i’m a fan of real pop culture! No disrespect but we watchin’ the show at the crib right now cause … well you know! i’m still happy for taylor! Boooyaaawwww! you are very very talented! I gave my awards to outkast when they deserved it over me… that’s what it is!! i’m not crazy yall, i’m just real. Sorry for that! I really feel bad for taylor and i’m sincerely sorry! Much respect!!”
Oh, yeah. Much respect. In post-You Lie times, your respect will come in the form of apologies the next day.
And did you notice "I’m sorry to my fans if I let you guys down!"? If... a nonapology. Because his fans might have loved it. Lots of folks loved Joe Wilson's "You lie" too.

X Factor chiefs are said to be furious that Beyoncé has also agreed to appear on Strictly Come Dancing.
Beyonce, who is promoting her new album I Am... Sasha Fierce, has already agreed to appear on the singing contest in December.
However, The Mirror reports that SCD have managed to get the singer to appear on the dancing show at the end of November.
"As far as we are concerned we are the No1 show on Saturday. If X Factor wants Beyoncé, they'll have to wait. She has signed and we've also got Take That confirmed for the coming weeks," a BBC source said.
Meanwhile, an insider at The X Factor said they also have Mariah Carey and Britney Spears lined up. "We aren't happy Beyoncé is doing Strictly, but she is just one of a number of huge names we're getting," the source said.

Rumours of Beyonce and Jay Z getting married started when the couple went to get a marriage license in Scarsdale, N.Y., on Tuesday.
A friend of the couple told People that singer Beyoncé Knowles wed her longtime boyfriend, rapper Jay-Z, on Friday.
A friend says, "It happened earlier this evening. Jay wanted it to be a really private affair – close friends and family."
The ceremony was followed by a lavish party at the rapper's Tribeca apartment that drew Beyoncé's mother Tina Knowles, her father/manager Mathew, her sister Solange, her Destiny's Child mates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, and the couple's friend Gwyneth Paltrow.
However no official confirmation has been made regarding the wedding.
Destiny's Child have discussed reforming the band after a number of reunions inspired them.
Singer Kelly Rowland revealed that a reformation could be on the cards and that she would like to start performing with Beyoncé Knowles and Michelle Williams again.
Rowland, who left the group when they split up in 2005, said: "This current spate of reunions has given us ideas. Despite what people say we are all still really close.
"A couple of weeks ago Beyoncé did a show in Los Angeles and asked me and Michelle to join her on stage to sing 'Survivor'. The emotion was incredible and it felt so good to be back up there with the girls again.

Beyonce was due to perform in Malaysia but the show has been cancelled. Her agent said it was scrapped due to a "scheduling conflict."
But a source reveals that Beyonce was not too happy about getting a hostile reaction from the people of the Muslim nation. Also Bey would have to tone down her outfits, cover-up and change her performance.

The awards season continues with the MTV Europe Music Awards taking place in Munich on 1 November. The event will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and Mika is among those who will be performing on the night.
Justin Timberlake leads the pack with four nominations. Beyonce, Amy Winehouse, Nelly Furtado and Rihanna are among the artists who have picked up three nominations.

Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé lead the list of nominees for the 24th annual VMAs, each with a massive seven nods, followed closely by Kanye West and Rihanna with five. British singer Amy Winehouse picked up three nominations.
Timberlake, Kanye, Winehouse and Rihanna are expected to perform at the event, along with Timbaland, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown, Lily Allen and the Foo Fighters.
You must have seen the video of Beyonce falling down on stage, but she isn't the only Destiny's Child gal to lose her footing on satge.
This is from a couple of years ago when Destiny's Child were performing 'Soldier'.Michelle took a tumble but carried on like a trooper along with Kelly and Beyonce.
Beyonce tumbled down the stairs while performing 'Ring the Alarm' in Florida. Apparently she then told the crowd, "Don't put it on YouTube!" And the crowd listened to what she said...NOT! The footage is not only on YouTube but on various oter sites. The fall looks quite nasty but her spokesperson insists she was not injured, reports Daily Mail.
